FREEEday 3 September 1999

Path
Pic of the day: September. Remember? This path was the one that, a month ago, was an alley of high red flowers, two walls of bright colors. Now they are gone. Autumn sun throws a handful of gold into the shadowed day. Beauty has not yet passed utterly from the land.

I don't care if Monday's blue...
It's sooo FREEDAY! I have more than a week of vacation. Woo hoo! Isn't it incredible? Being entirely on my own. And better than that: I've off and bought train tickets for the next week. A fast and reasonably cheep express train to take me to Oslo in the early Monday afternoon, and the evening train back to Kristiansand on Thursday. They're both on green exits, meaning they are cheaper than rush hour trains (such as Friday and Sunday afternoons). And by buying a Thursday afternoon ticket on Thursday, I got a special rebate for reserving my seat more than a week ahead. You have to admit that their rebates make sense. If I had had as much sense, I would have got myself a regular traveller card, which would give me further rebates. I would saved the cost in ca 2-3 trips back and forth. Most years I travel that much anyway.

Even without that, though, I feel pretty good. I bet Supergirl has a lot of things to tell from Germany, and I haven't seen her younger sister after she got her driver's lisence (I hope she's unhurt). I don't even dare to hope that I may catch a glimpse of the new improved Midwife, but at least I am sure to hear if she's found herself a suitable boyfriend.

...

I'm fascinated. After being ignored for 40 years, suddenly I've been asked 3 times in a month or so about my opinions on media and politics. Yes, this is the third call from some opinion institute. For a quarter of an hour I was allowed to explain them that I don't read papers except at work, that I haven't seen TV the last month and then some, that I don't read magazines except popular science magazine, don't listen to radio except news, and don't visit Norwegian websites except for news. I bet they wonder what I spend my time doing (especially since they also want to know that I'm the only one in the household). Truth to tell, I wonder too, sometimes.

Now if they'd asked my opinion about the various competing versions of Civilization, they would probably find me a lot more informative.

...

So what if my best friend doesn't love me like I do? That's natural. It's the laws of supply and demand: There's a large supply of me and a large demand for her. After all, which diary would you rather read: A beautiful young woman who gets drunk in a faraway land, or a middle aged man walking home with his groceries while wondering if our universe was spawned from a higher-order universe or came into existence from emptyness? Thought so.

My main advantage is that I am available. There is a lot of me. No need to thirst for more Mags ... there is enough of me to swim in. Ask of me, and it shall be given. Well, with the exception of full frontal nudity I guess. At least until the legal niceties are in order. :)

Have an absolutely wonderful, incredibly delicious weekend!
